About Sundarbans

The Sundarbans is a vast mangrove forest located in the delta region of the Padma, Meghna, and Brahmaputra river basins. It is spread across India and Bangladesh, covering approximately 10,000 square kilometers (3,900 square miles). The Sundarbans is not only a natural wonder but also a vital ecosystem that supports numerous species and provides valuable resources for the surrounding communities. It is also UNESCO World Heritage Site in both India and Bangladesh since 1987. Mangrove trees have adapted to survive in saline and swampy conditions, and they play a crucial role in stabilizing the coastline, providing habitat for wildlife, and acting as a natural barrier against storm surges and tidal waves. Due to its Tarrien forest  safaris can only be done  by tourist  boats.

The Sundarbans is located in the southern part of Bangladesh and the eastern part of India, along the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal. Around 100 km from Kolkata lies this magnificent terrain. it has total 102 islands 54 islands are habitable for humans and rest is kept for the wild, The Sundarbans is renowned for its rich biodiversity. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the Bengal tiger, saltwater crocodile, various species of birds, fish, and reptiles the Bengal tiger is one of the most iconic one.

The Sundarbans is also home to a significant population of saltwater crocodiles , some of the largest reptiles on Earth, perfectly suited to the estuarine conditions of the region. Spotted deer  roam the forest, serving as essential prey for the tigers. The waters are inhabited by estuarine crocodiles, while fishing cats  stalk their aquatic prey. Numerous bird species, such as white-bellied sea eagles, Ospreys,  herons, different types of kingfishers , bee-eaters , different types of owls like bappy fish owl, owlet grace the skies, making the Sundarbans a paradise for birdwatchers.

Sundarbans is home for honey collectors and Fishermans who risk their life for the stomach, every year local people go for honey collection in the mangrove jungle where they face one of their greatest fear THE ROYAL BENGAL TIGER because we are the easiest prey for them, however people for fishing also get troubled by tiger and  crocodiles. As we know its their land we are the ones who  disturbing their natural habitat but people have fill up their stomach not many people could go out and survive in the cities. You'll be amazed to know every year more than 50 people get killed by tiger and crocodiles. 

Bonobibi is the guardian spirit or deity of the Sundarbans, worshipped by the local fishermen, honey collectors, and woodcutters who rely on the forest for their livelihoods. The narrative revolves around the adventures of Bonobibi, her brother Shah Jongoli, and the evil spirit Dakkhin Rai.

In the story, Bonobibi is portrayed as a protector of the forest and its inhabitants. She is often depicted as a benevolent and compassionate goddess who helps the people of the Sundarbans navigate the challenges posed by the forest. Dakkhin Rai, on the other hand, is a malevolent spirit associated with danger and harm.

The Bonobibi Pala is traditionally performed as a form of oral storytelling, often accompanied by music and dance. The narrative serves not only as entertainment but also as a way to impart moral lessons and cultural values to the audience. Through the adventures of Bonobibi, the story emphasizes the importance of harmony between humans and nature and the need to respect the forest and its creatures.

This folk epic plays a vital role in the cultural fabric of the Sundarbans region, fostering a sense of community and shared identity among the people living in this unique and challenging environment.
